Book Barum is a slow-paced Korean literary subscription. Each month we send a hand-chosen book, a reading note, and a small companion gift — quietly, to your door.

On Barum

In Korean, barum is the wind that moves through an open window — soft, unhurried, almost unnoticed.

We started Book Barum to bring that same feeling into a reading practice. Every month, a small editorial team in South Korea reads, argues, and finally chooses one book — a novel, a quiet essay, a graphic book — that we would happily press into the hands of a Korean learner.

We handpick the book that is immersive, approachable, and provides meaningful cultural discovery to intermediate Korean readers. It arrives wrapped in 한지 paper, with a reading note from the editor, and a single object to accompany the reading.

The White Light,
the White Paper

하얀 빛, 하얀 종이

A debut novel about a young librarian in Gangwon who begins to receive anonymous letters left between the pages of returned books. Quiet, luminous, and almost shockingly tender — it is the kind of book that asks you to read slowly, and to write someone a letter when you finish.

  • The Book하얀 빛, 하얀 종이 — A debut novel by Yoon Hae‑in, translated from the Korean.
  • The LetterA 4-page hand-written editor’s letter, on hanji paper, mailed sealed.
  • The CompanionA small pinch‑pot of jasmine tea from a tea master in Hadong.
  • The BookmarkA pressed gingko leaf, sealed in glassine, gathered this autumn.

The Ritual

How a barum arrives — three quiet steps, and a wait.

01 · Step One

Chosen, in Seoul

On the first quiet morning of every month, our editor sits with a stack of new Korean fiction, essays, and poetry — and chooses one. It must be a book worth slowing down for.

02 · Step Two

Wrapped, by hand

Each parcel is folded into hanji paper, tied with cotton twine, and finished with a wax seal. Inside, a hand-written letter from the editor explains the choice.

03 · Step Three

Delivered, gently

Posted from Seoul to your door between the 14th and 20th. We send a quiet email when it ships, and another the day it arrives — nothing more.

Reader Voices

Letters back,
from our readers.

Every now and then a letter finds its way back to our small studio in Seoul. We keep them in a wooden box by the window. A few of our favourites are below.

  1. 01

It is the only piece of mail I open slowly. The envelope, the wrapping, the letter — all of it asks me to put my phone down before I begin.

  2. 02

I have started writing my own letters again. Real ones, on paper. That is what Barum did to me.

Mateo R.Reader since Edition VI · Berlin
  3. 03

The book is wonderful, but the half-hour of quiet that comes with opening it is the actual gift.
